<\/em><\/strong>is the title of the talk and concert that the Bilbao Blues Festival will offer in the auditorium of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao<\/strong>, conducted by the journalist and writer Manuel L\u00f3pez Poy, author of several books related to blues and African-American music and director of the Blues Yearbook published by the Barcelona Blues Society.<\/p>\n

The narration will be accompanied by the live music of Catalan pianist Miriam Aparicio, who has been a member of the bands Big Mama Montse & Sister Marion, along with the quintessential Catalan blues singer, Big Mama Montse, and the TotaBlues Band. Aparicio was also president of the Societat de Blues de Barcelona.<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the talk, images and anecdotes from the life and work of great blues ladies such as Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Ethel Waters, Memphis Minnie, Gladys Bentley and Ida Cox will be projected. At the same time a tribute will be paid to African-American women<\/strong> through photographs that portray the historical journey of the slaves who fought for their freedom, the first black feminists, the pioneers in business, education, the arts and industry.\u00a0 Stories such as that of the slave Harriet Tubman, organiser of slave escapes, spy for the North American army and one of the first black feminists, or Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, the first African-American to write a novel, or Madam C.J. Walker, the daughter of slaves and the first African-American woman to write a novel.
